Verify phone numbers, with or without SMS

How it works

  1. Verify silently first

When the user's device is on the mobile network, Number Verification confirms the number through the network connection, so there is no code to type.

  2. Fall back to a one-time code

Otherwise, send a one-time code by SMS with OTP send-code, and check what the user enters with validate-code and the authenticationId you received.

  3. Add a risk check for recovery

Before you let someone recover an account by phone, call SIM Swap check to see whether the number moved to a new SIM recently.

Questions

When should I use Number Verification instead of an SMS code?

When the user's device is connected through the mobile network: the check happens in the background and the user types nothing. Use OTP by SMS when it isn't, for example on Wi-Fi.

What does validating a code need?

The authenticationId returned by send-code and the code the user entered.

Which standard do these APIs follow?

Number Verification, OTP and SIM Swap follow CAMARA, part of the GSMA Open Gateway initiative.
